An example of Nick's deteriorating voice

Post by Jordan311 »

With all this talk of Nick's voice having gone to hell, I didn't want to believe it...

Then this just came on shuffle...

And it opened my eyes a bit..

He's just so incredibly flat the entire song... :(
I'm surprised I didn't notice this earlier. I mean I knew his voice has suffered over the years a bit, but this makes it sound pretty damn bad.

Well I think it's impossible to sound good while singing that song, personally. Perhaps comparing two live recordings of a different song would be better... waiting sucks. :(

No kidding. It's a horrible song...

But the range required to sing it well is minimal. And seeing as a song with such a limited range gets butchered, it's hard to imagine them writing anything new that requires any impressive vocal skills.

But then again maybe this means we'll get to see Nick add a bunch of effects to his voice and shit again like What Was I Thinking, and Nutsymtom.
That would be pretty sweet.

So what if his voice is going downhill a little bit. Do you have a good time at the shows? With most songs does it still sound good, or at least passable? Then STFU. You only notice it more when you are trying to find something wrong.

Honestly, a year ago I would have scoffed at you, and realistically I know it will never happen because Nick is the negative and positive force in the band, simultaneously holding it together, and holding it back -- but I think 311, the band, would be a lot better with a new front man. Get rid of Nick and put some ambitious, talented 25-30 year old in there who still has a genuine loyalty to the music it's self and you'd get more sincere, progressive music, backed up with a better voice and less lethargic stage presence.

No offense to Nick. But he's not even 40 yet and he's less animated than 65 year old McJagger. And his voice is just shot.

nick sounded just as bad or worse on the grassroots tour. there are plenty of bootlegs that can prove that too, but who cares.
bitch about them playing straight ahead and writing gay lyrics not how nick sounds bad, hes always sounded a bit off.
i wish they would bring back the live vocal effects. the transistor tour was their most balling shit ever.

The problem is that Nick doesn't take care of his voice. The summer and fall tours supporting DTOM entailed some of Nick's worst live performances.....just listen to him on the album for god sakes....he sounds terrible. However, I will say that he actually sounds pretty decent on some newer bootlegs out there and he was pretty solid at 311 Day 06 (listen to the video floating around of him singing Down South....pretty solid). He's just lazy.....plain and simple.

P.S. SA sounds like shit on the recording too.

Half the problem is their audience. A 311 show consists of a majority of teenagers who although get high and drunk, don't have an ear for music. I like the atmosphere at the shows, but its really only a small percentage of fans that actually want 311 to challenge themselves and the listeners with music of a higher difficulty level. They can either cut their audience in half and play more challenging music like grassroots/music/transistor or they can continue down the safe path where they really don't have to make any improvements because the fans are just plain ignorant. I would to see them tripping out on shrooms in the studio again, and really fucking with our ears like they did on previous records. It seems like the only bands that actually play are jazz/fusion artists and they usually just do session work, and don't remain a unit for 10 plus years...ughhhh
