Recommend me a band, please

Post by Jordan311 »

someone here who has good taste in music recommend me something!
I feel like discovering a new band.

Possibly something indie. progressive. umm... something different. nothing too crazy. maybe something mellow or ambient or uhhh... who knows. I've been real into stuff like Explosions in the sky lately.
or maybe something that would be good for summer listening.
Just gimme the name of the band and their best album, or gimme a link to a myspace page or something and I'll check it out!

thanks in advance, loves

Ambient is a great word for Gavin Castleton's newest album "Hospital Hymns". I've been hooked on it.

http://www.myspace.com/gavincastleton

The default song on the page, Hymn 2, is from the album I mentioned. If you like it, I can send you the album via AIM.

Fair warning though, Gavin has a little bit of a learning curve about him. I wasn't into him at all when I first started listening. He lives in the town next to me, but he's done all sorts of national shit. Very well respected, and very strongly against the music industry.

He's a very interesting musician that has the ability to play a wide variety of genres.

how do you like ebu gogo? GM is so talented but they hate each other, so seeing 3 of them put out something nuts like ebu gogo could be something that brings them together for some more albums, i hate that 3 or 4 years stuff

I went to see Ebu Gogo twice. I was hugely impressed that Brandon can play drums so well. They put on a pretty tight and entertaining live show.

Sadly, I didn't get into Gavin/Ebu/Gruvis until after Gruvis stopped playing shows. I'd flip if I could get a chance to see them someday.

cul de sac. they're instrumental like explosions in the sky, but throw in jazz and fusion; works really well. check their album "crashes to light, minutes to its fall"

frank zappa's "shut up and play yer guitar" is good stuff. all instrumental, all live. steve vai and zappa going toe-to-toe.

Nope. Recommend and album and I'll grab it from oink.

So far I'm downloading cul de sac, the format, and state radio. I listened to the song "snails" from the format on their myspace and I really like it.
that gavin castleton guy is alrite, but I don't know if I'm too keen on his singing voice.
I'm headed to bed right now but hopefully I'll get a chance to listen to it all more tomorrow.

I'm telling ya man, it's the learning curve. I know that Hymn 2 sounds like Coldplay faggy piano ballad stuff, but that's not what he's about.

TANGENT:

Here's what I've always found about getting into new musicians, or actually any form of artist: The quicker you like it, the quicker you'll be bored with it. On the other hand, if it's really bizarre and unique, you won't be as attracted to it at first. But, over time, if you learn to like it the appreciation will be much more long term.

Think about every cd you bought when you were younger because of the one catchy single that now is collecting dust on your shelf.

I absolutely hated both Transistor and Grassroots when I first got them (after Blue). Now they're my favorite albums ever.

Guster is a band from around Boston, and has been one of my favorite bands for a long time. They have a rather unique sound.
